| Abstract | The invitational Conference on Library Manpower was an attempt to bring together not only library educators, library administrators, and other practitioners in the library field, but also leading figures from other fields who have demonstrated their concern about manpower problems and have been engaged actively in work related to training and utilization of professional personnel. The conference opened with the presentation of three formal background papers which covered the general purpose of the conference and problems of professional manpower in the fields of nursing and social work. These papers were then discussed in a general meeting and their basic principles were identified. Following this, the conference divided into three smaller discussion groups to explore the implications of the identified principles as they applied to the subject assigned to each group: recruitment, education and training, and manpower utilization respectively. The recommendations of each group were then presented to the conference as a whole and formed a basis for the final session at which the recommendations for action were proposed, reflecting the thinking of all the participants. Included in this report are the text of the three papers, the discussion group recommendations, and the recommendations of the final general meeting, as well as a summary of conference highlights.
